I - Innocence

"Aparna! Come inside. Now!" Her mother's shrill voice rang in little Aparna's ears as she continued to play with Kuttan, her maid's three year old son.

Seeing that her daughter had no intention of getting up anytime soon, her mother came outside to the ground and dragged her inside forcefully. She did not see Kuttan's tear filled eyes or her daughter's look of contempt for her.

"How many times do I have to tell you that you are not to make friends with children beneath your status! Here, take your Kids's tablet and go play some video game in your room." Saying that she was quickly dismissed by her overtly social status conscious Mom.

Outside, Kuttan went crying to find his own mother. That afternoon two souls lost their innocence.

  1. I know a lot and I mean A LOT of parents like this. They should be ashamed of themselves.

    1. So do I. There are a lot of people who are still stuck in the fifteenth century.

  7. This is so very common. It is sad that most parents don't walk their talk! They teach the kids values, but they themselves don't follow them.
We teach children to be kind, but we end up choosing who they have to be kind to :(

  12. That is how the vast majority of Indian educated middle class behave. Sad. But that is the ground reality. Who should change ? How do we change ? Only the next generation will grow out of this snobbish psyche and mingle with other humans on an equal footing. You wrote so well, Aathira, it almost sounded like a poem ! Short crisp and Truth unveiled frankly ! Good show. Keep it up.

  13. Very rightly put, most parents spoil their kids and rob them of their innocence with the wrong kind of advice and perspectives.

  15. So sad! This happened to me :/ Not my mother, but my grandmother. It was to prevent me from running away with the maid's son. I can't even begin to explain how utterly ridiculous the thought is.
