She was secure in the knowledge that her marriage appeared happy on the outside; and he of the fact that that his affair was a secret.
But they both knew that their life was a lie.
The facade showed a content couple, but it dared not reveal the dissatisfaction that a bit of gentle probing would unearth. The picture that adorned the mantle had them beaming at the camera with fake smiles plastered across their faces. As night fell, they went into two different bedrooms, living their own separate lives.

How do you write so brilliantly? You weave the most complex emotions in a simple yet poignant manner.
ReplyDeleteThumbs up. You go girl! :)
Thanks a lot, Darling :) You are too kind!
Deletesigh.....
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteProfound, nice take on the theme
ReplyDeleteGood wishes.
Thank you, Ruchi :)
DeleteI wonder how many people we know in our lives are going through this silently.
ReplyDeleteA lot, I guess. We never know what goes behind closed doors.
DeleteTo each, his own... That's what I felt after reading this, he/she might have their reasons. Or not.
ReplyDeleteMaybe. But then it's not for us to judge. Like you said, to each, his own.
DeleteThanks for reading, Keirthana :)
I am sure their family and relatives must be very proud of them. SOCIETY!!!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! At least some people end up happy seeing this.
DeleteHmmm should they continue living like this? The society has killed more dreams and happiness than anything else.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Aathira :)
Such a life is not worth living, I feel. What is the whole point in it then?
DeleteThanks so much, Love :)
If only they had courage to break the facade and step out in the world which holds their happiness, not society's.
ReplyDeleteIt's very rare that people break out of their shells. They are more concerned in saving their faces in front of others.
DeleteThat is sad.. dont know why people want to spend life like that .. best is to part ways and live happy life
ReplyDeleteBikram's
I agree, Bikram. It's better to be happy alone rather than being miserable together.
DeleteSad story.. Nicely written!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vinitha! Welcome to my blog :)
DeleteJustifies the title. Brilliant! :) Letting go of something you don't have takes guts too ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, Shanx :) And the courage to do just that is what is missing most nowadays.
DeleteRelationships are so strange, right. Some based on facade...some on trust....some just non existent. Nicely done
ReplyDeleteYes, that's so true, Sid. Thanks a ton :) I love seeing your comments :)
DeleteWhat an awful life that would be!
ReplyDeleteYes, anything would be better than realizing the fact that your whole life was a lie.
DeleteA beautifully written piece. Conveys so many emotions in just 5 sentences! It makes me wonder if life's the same for the couples around me
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, Rajrupa. You have such a nice name!
DeleteA lot of people are living this life. We can never see beyond the masks that they wear.
Brilliant Aathira! Yeah so many times people lead such lives only because they are worried about what the society would speak about them!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Reema! It's sad that people lead such pretentious lives.
DeleteNice one... and true.. there are a lot of such people around us.. we think we know them but in reality they just maintain a facade...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Seeta! True, such people are around us. And it's sad.
DeleteHi Aathira,
ReplyDeleteMost of the time they can't come out because of commitments, not only to the society..always it hard to come out and be lonely forever rather than being around by somebody..i know one couple living like this for more than ten years and finally they got united by their daughters..its so wonderful..sometimes time heals everything.
Thank you! But is such a life really worth living? Time may heal everything. But like the couple you mentioned, by the time they realize their mistake, a good part of their life is already over.
