Saying goodbye to F.R.I.E.N.D.S

I spent the whole of my day watching the last season of FRIENDS. I had begun to watch this TV show only recently. But once I started it, then there was no going back. I was hooked to it right from the pilot episode.

Here are a group of friends who stick with each other though thick and thin, through highs and lows. Of course, the fact that you would be laughing so hard in each of the episodes is the biggest plus. Since most of you have already watched this one, I'm sure you wouldn't want me droning about what the story is about. It is about life of a group of six friends, to put it simply.

I have enjoyed watching and learning about each of the six characters. Rachel, though rich and spoiled in the beginning soon matures into a little more responsible woman. Falling in and out of love, making her own mistakes and taking a chance at relationships, she is a character which most of us can relate to.

Ross, the geeky, nerdy one of the group. It is hard not to laugh when he takes life so seriously. The on and off relationship between Rachel and Ross can't make you help but wish that they would solve their differences end up together.

Monica and Chandler are my favorite couple ever. The friendship between them, the way they fall in love with each other, the way they handle their relationship, how they work their way through marriage, I mean the list is endless. How can one not fall in love with this amazing couple? Monica with her OCD for cleanliness and Chandler with his wit and sarcasm are as different as chalk and cheese. But that is what makes them so perfect for each other. Monica is easily one of my favorite characters in the show. I love her for her loyalty towards her friends and the strong woman that she is.

Phoebe is an interesting character in herself. The fact that she is not easy to figure out and her bouts of weirdness makes her character lively. As much weird as she is most of the times, I found myself humming Smelly Cat even after the show was over. Weird, I know. But such is the Phoebe effect.

And last, but certainly not the least is Joey. What can I say about him? How about this- How you doin'? This guy makes you crack up and you will find yourself rolling around in laughter, clutching your sides. Joey doesn't share food. This made me like him all the more! The way he is always there for his friends, no matter what, the way he puts them first (other than food), there are a million reasons to fall in love with him.

OH MY GOD! I almost forgot about Janice! Though she doesn't have a regular appearance on the show, this woman is hard to forget. Especially after her random appearances in the friends' life right from the beginning to the very end. She had me howling in laughter and I'm not exaggerating here.

And as I watched the last season today, I shed a few tears. Sad that it's coming to an end. Happy that Monica and Chandler finally got what they deserved. Glad that Ross and Rachel end up together for good. Happy for Phoebe that she gets her happy ending. Sad for Joey who is going to have a hard time missing his friends. Perhaps a bit more than the rest.

Thank you, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. You have made my days a lot more lively. You have given me migraines from watching you back to back the entire day. And most times, the entire night as well. But you kept me hooked. You kept me wanting more. And lastly, Thank you for reminding me that the bad stuff shall pass. So will the good stuff. But what happens in between is what makes life worthwhile.

This post is written for Day 30 of the Ultimate Blog Challenge for July 2014 and NaBloPoMo

P.S. I made gulab jamuns today! It came out not so perfect and a bit burnt on the sides. But it tasted great and I'm happy :)

P.P.S. Did you know that the fried jamuns before dipping them into the sugar syrup tastes even better? Sounds odd, I know! But try it. The smell that wafts from the frying jamuns are to die for.

  1. Hey Athira

I have watched all the Seasons of Friends some 3 times ;) , but YOUR post was just as entertaining! #HUGSSS

I am not a huge fan of Monica and Chandler, simply because she was TOO strong and he was TOO hen-pecked. While their opposite personalities certainly made for good television, I am not sure whether such couples are truly successful in the long run! ;) Give me Richard and Monica any day. His maturity balanced her obsessiveness perfectly :D

Joey and Phoebe are my favorites. I love this line: "Sad for Joey who is going to have a hard time missing his friends. Perhaps a bit more than the rest." AMEN!

Indeed, part of me wanted Rachel (my second least favorite character) and Joey to hook up forever because Ross is an annoying hypocrite. I admit to have lost interest in this show after the entire group treated Emily VERY unfairly. Although ROSS was the one who broke HER heart, they all pretended like SHE was the 'monster'. Au contraire, Emily was a darling for wanting Ross back despite his MAJOR BONER at the altar - I would have simply cursed him and walked away. But these FRIENDS put HER down for trying to break the group - would you really want your HUSBAND to be friends with the woman whose name he took at the altar of YOUR marriage? Come on!

But Joey and Pheobe were charming throughout, while Chandler's self-deprecating attitude always made me smile.

    LOVELY post #HUGSS

    MUCH love
    Kitto

    2. Thank you for reading, Krithika :) I can see that you are a FRIENDS buff like me! A big hug to you :)

Monica and Richard? Naaa... I'm not a big fan of mustaches and seeing that on Richard was a big turn off. Besides, he was a bit too old for someone like her. He was a nice character. But somehow him confessing his love for her just before Chandler was about to propose, made me hate him more. Maybe it's just me, but I feel Monica and Chandler were perfect for each other. The way Chandler handles certain situations, not getting carried away, made me like him more.

Yes, the whole Rachel and Ross affair was a bit annoying at times. I'm not a big fan of Rachel either. But I can't sympathize with Emily somehow. Maybe because I'm as possessive like the gang when it comes to their friends! Or I'm just prejudiced. Either ways, I'm glad Ross didn't end up with her.

      Keep visiting, Kitto!

P.S. You don't have to apologize about my name :) It's a long name and most people tend to misspell it! But Thanks for correcting it all the same :)

  2. I too have started watching friends recently and I love it. Right now I am about to finish the 9th season. And yes I agree with what you said about the characters. I love each one of the characters so much that I try searching for such in real life!

    1. Thank you, Ma'am. But I hope this hasn't stopped you from wanting to watch the rest. It's totally worth your time.

  4. I've seen the series once and I can watch it any time of the day and I'd still be entertained.
FRIENDS for me was more than a sitcom. It was about relationships, the good/bad times, the crazy stuff and above all- how we value our friendships. It is soooo difficult to find that bunch, who'd be there for you; no matter what. Who would be there in your good and bad times and respect your individuality without any expectations.

It made me believe in Love and its after-taste. The mush, the sex, every little thing.
And you just brought that back for me. Thank you Aathira. :)

    1. Thank you, Babe :) I agree, it's much more than just a sitcom. You cry, laugh, fall in love along with the six friends. And yes, it makes you want for those few friends who are there by your side for a long, long time. Even when there are hard times.

I'm so glad that my post gave you a flash back :) The pleasure is all mine! xoxo

  5. You started watching it recently? I completed watching all the seasons the minute it was out. I saw the final episode around 9 years ago! I cried and cried and cried, thinking that now my life was over :P

Till date I watch all the re-runs. I remember every scene, every dialogue. Yet I want to watch it! It is the best thing that has happened to TV until now :)

    1. Yeah, unfortunately, I have been one of the late bloomers for 'FRIENDS'. But better late than never, right? You cried 9 years ago? I cried yesterday! Yes, felt like life had come to a pause.

The best thing about FRIENDS is that you won't get bored watching it over and again.

  7. I have watched a million re-runs of this one and still it's my favorite stress buster. FRIENDS is like my lifetime sitcom, I treat it so. Man, I am gonna start another re-run of it :)

I looooooooovvvve Gulab Jamuns, especially the home made ones and yes, fried ones taste better. I always sneak a couple of them before my mom can dump them into the sugar syrup :D

    1. Btw there was a spin off named Joey based on Joey's life since the creators of FRIENDS thought they hadn't utilized Matt Le Blanc's full potential. But it got discontinued because the show didn't gain popularity.

I wouldn't say the spin off is a must watch. However, if you are a die hard FRIENDS fan that you'd watch anything to keep the feeling of it going and a Joey fan, you would like to watch it once. :)

    2. Happy FRIENDS watching, yet again, Keirthana :) I don't think anyone would ever get tired of watching this one!

I haven't seen the show called Joey that you are talking about. I have to watch it right now! Does it take off from where FRIENDS ended? I would give anything to see them all back together once more. Just to know what happens next and how life is treating all six of them.

Fried Gulab jamuns before dunking into the sugar syrup are the best, no? :) It's the yummy fragrance that makes it so irresistible! Try making them. You can eat as many as you like without the syrup ;)

    3. Sad that it doesn't feature all of them. It just features Joey's life, how he goes off to live in LA and try hollywood. It just shows his wayward lifestyle. It's okayish to watch once for die-hard Joey fans.

    4. I went and did a search as soon as you told me about it! But I guess we will be disappointed since the others are not there. FRIENDS have set the bar so high that it would be difficult for anything to surpass that. Shall give it a watch sometime soon.

    1. I know, right! And do you remember the one in which Monica and Rachel loses the flat? It is absolutely hilarious that no one ever knew what Chandler did! Something to do with numbers and data processing and in Rachel's words something like Transponster :D
